Calvary
Spanish Mission Seeing a growing need for mission work, the FBC purchased the old East Side Baptist Church building and started the Calvary Spanish Mission which ran from 85 to 100 in Sunday School, with a fully graded church program. Later in 1956, the church saw an opportunity again and purchased the Friendship Baptist Church to start a mission in the south side area of Haskell which became known as the South Side Mission. A letter from the Missions Committee dated February 5, 1958, stated that the Friendship Baptist Church had grown until it was a fully organized program of church work with a full-time pastor. In its first year of organization, the South Side Misison saw 50 additions: 20 by baptism, 22 by letter and 8 by statement. A dedication service was held on June 15, 1958, with a song service led by R. C. Couch, Jr.; scripture and prayer by Buster Gholson; history by M. 0. Rexrode; a challenge by Marvin Mosley; special music by Bill Keck; and a message by Dr. J. W. Caldwell. The South Side Mission was in operation until 1975. At that time a bus ministry was started and the members who so desired came into the First Baptist Church. As the South Side Mission building was in better condition and was more centrally located, the Spanish Calvary Mission then moved to this site. At the present time, they are holding their services at this location, but the old buildings have been replaced. The old East Side Church property, where the Spanish Mission was first begun, has been disposed of by the Church. In January, 1958, the Brushy Baptist Church building was secured, and the two buildings were connected, making a spacious accommodation for a growing congregation. The Brushy Baptist Church building was given to First Baptist, Haskell, in exchange for a piano for the Gores Baptist Church. The total cost in securing the building, moving it, running foundation, and joining the buildings together with plumbing, and the painting and other necessary repairs cost about $2500.
